Baltimore Invitational Regatta – Saturday April 9

BALTIMORE INVITATIONAL REGATTA – Saturday, April 9, 2011
7:00 am – 2:00 pm

ALL ROWERS NEED TO ARRIVE BY 7:15am and plan for a loooong day!
Coxswains please arrive by 7:00.

First thing in the morning, you need to unload the trailer and rig all
our boats as soon as you arrive! Our first entry in the regatta has to
launch by 8:30 (WN4+). The last race is at 1:00 pm (MV8+). Some of you
will be rowing twice. I’ll post line ups soon.

AFTER the regatta, we need to de-rig and load everything back on the
trailer, then drive the boats to Bladensburg, THEN unload and re-rig
the boats so that they are ready for Monday.

Please do not make plans on Saturday before 5:00 pm.

This is a very well-run regatta, with t-shirts and limited
concessions. Tell your folks that there are good spots to set up tents
& chairs and view the finish line. We will be competing against teams
from DC, Baltimore, Delaware and New Jersey. This is a bigger regatta
than the ones we have participated in recently. Please write your name
on everything that you want to keep!

Here is information from the Regatta Director:

Parking:
The boathouse parking lot is small and will fill quickly. Many spaces
will be reserved for officials, handicaps, and school mini-buses. No
parking is allowed on the grass or along Waterview Avenue. If you park
there you can expect to get a ticket or get towed. Overflow parking
can be found at the public boat launching area on the east side of
Hanover St (through the lights at the intersection of Waterview and
Route 2), near the Harbor Hospital. Once you drop your rowers, follow
the signs to hospital parking.

Spectator Viewing:

The best view for launching and recovery of shells is the dock area
and the long fishing pier that extends out approximately 100 meters
east of the launch area. The middle 500 meters of the race can be
viewed along the shoreline roughly parallel to the course north of the
boathouse but before the bridge. The Hanover St. Bridge offers an
excellent view of the race from two vantage points. The first would be
on the south side of the bridge. This offers a view of the first 1100
meters of the race and allows you to watch the boats travel under the
bridge arches. The north side of the bridge allows spectators to view
shells coming out of the arches and the last 400 meters of the race as
well as shells returning to the dock. Please be aware that the bridge
does have heavy traffic and crossing should be done with great
caution. The sidewalks on the bridge are rather wide and if you can
handle the noise of an occasional tractor-trailer going by you should
be okay. The finish area is north of the bridge near Harbor Hospital.

Concessions:

•    Teams should provide enough food and drink for all their athletes.
Grilling is permissible, and we plan to have a grill going.
•    Official regatta T-shirts will be on sale.

Restroom Facilities:

Portable bathrooms for athletes and spectators to use will be situated
west of the boathouse.

Handicapped Access to Races:

The upper area of the Baltimore Water Resource Center does have an
open deck on top. The deck area will be used by the regatta committee
to facilitate the event. We can also open this area up to those who
use wheelchairs or are mobility limited so that they might have a
vantage point to see the races.
