What a frustrating, equipment plagued day we had at Chestertown yesterday! The day began with beautiful weather and perfect conditions. The novice girls eight finished their heat with a fantastic race coming in second to Whitman. Results remain unofficial as no final took place. The Varsity boys four qualified for the final in their early race.
From there, the weather and Blair’s fortunes began to go down hill. The novice boys four had a broken foot stretcher at the starting line which left the coaches scrambling to rob a foot-stretcher from another boat and do emergency boat surgery on the water. The boys had a disappointing finish. The replacement foot-stretcher in the second four failed mid race for the girl’s novice four leaving two of the girls rowing arms and back only. Despite this failure, they finished fourth!
The weather took a turn for the worse over the noon break, and safety officials decided to scrap all the afternoon novice races and the four’s finals. Equipment problems continue to plague the Blair team. Improbably, each of the three varsity eights had seat breakages during their races leaving the rowers struggling to keep pace. Everyone showed grit and determination by finishing their races in the middle of the pack to the best of their abilities in trying circumstances.
