Blair Crew takes home its first trophy at the WMIRA 2012 Championship

Congratulations to Blair Crew for an amazing performance in the WMIRA Championship Regatta on Saturday, May 12th. The girls Novice Eight defeated powerhouse teams, Whitman, Walter Johnson and BCC in a 1500 meter race on the Potomac River in Washington, DC. The girls took home gold medals and the Silver Cup trophy.The girls Novice Eight defeated powerhouse teams, Whitman, Walter Johnson and BCC in a 1500 meter race on the Potomac River in Washington, DC. They are the first Blair Crew team ever to have earned qualification for for SRAA Junior Nationals! Ms. Renay Johnson, Blair Principal, was on hand for a photo opportunity as the girls came off the water. Way to go Keianna, Jeanne, Chloe, Alexandra, Sadie, Emily, Martha, Cailyn and Maddie P! You guys deserve those gold medals!

The Varsity Boys and the Varsity Girls also did well in their heats and advanced to Finals. The Novice Boys Four raced against powerhouse teams, Gonzaga, BCC and DeMatha. They rowed a good race, but did not make it to Finals.

The WV4+ (in a new boat with only 20 minutes of previous water time) placed third in their heat and went on to race in the Petite Finals. They defeated Holton Arms and earned a medal. Congratulations to Jeanne, Annie O, Kirin, Naomi and coxswain Jakob, who stepped in at the last minute!

The MV8+ defeated Georgetown Day School, DeMatha and St. Johns College in their heat, and were in a competitive Petite Final with Wilson and Bishop O’Connell finishing the race ahead of them.

The WV8+ finished their heat four seconds behind Whitman, earning them the No. 2 spot in a five-boat Final. They pushed hard against Whitman, BCC and a come-from-behind Bishop Ireton, who surged into third place in the last 200 meters of the race.

The WN4 burned up their heat with the fastest time – which was also the second fastest across both heats. In the final, the four boats provided a tough and close finish with Blair capturing 3rd place overall.

All the boats raced at their competitive best and we couldn’t be more proud of their performances.

Thank you to everyone, even the Alternates who came out to cheer on the team! Thank you to parents and families! We have the most amazing team, with the best team spirit and a great attitude! Thank you for making all the hard work so much fun!

Ergathon Fundraiser January 29

The First Blair Crew Ergathon will take place on Sunday, January 29th from noon to 4pm. This will be a fun and energetic team fundraising event and all crew team members should plan to participate.

An info. session for all Blair crew team members will take place on Thursday, December 22 at 3:05 pm by the weight room. Please plan to attend this info. session whether or not you are participating in winter workout.

Winter Workouts begin December 1

THE WORKOUTS:

Run from Thursday, Dec. 1st through Thursday, March 1st. from 2:45 until 4:30 pm. (rowers who end school at 3:00 may come then).

For the month of December, workouts will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays only; after that, workouts will be held Monday-Thursday

Rowers who want to row in the Spring are strongly advised to participate in winter workouts unless they are doing another sport which will keep them in shape for the demands of crew. Rowers will get better seating, and teams will be more competitive, if they work out over the winter. Coaches will review winter attendance lists when putting boats together.

HOW TO REGISTER:

Returning and new rowers should visit the Registration Page and fill out the appropriate form. Everyone will need to pay the registration fee as well.

Team helps clean Northwest Branch

In response to the team’s efforts, Anne Ambler, representing Neighbors of the Northwest Branch, stated: “Thanks so much to the Blair Crew Team for a positively super cleanup! And from the pictures, that cleanup was long overdue! You probably got some stuff that had been there for years, and I see you did get up that large ravine. I wasn’t sure you would get that far, but it was awash in plastic bags, so I’m delighted that you did! I agree, it is very obvious that we need a fee for bags. Given a value, bags are much less likely to be tossed. I hope the team felt satisfied with their morning’s work! Please give them a BIG thank you from the Neighbors of the Northwest Branch, from the Northwest Branch itself, and from the Anacostia River.”

Trailblazer debuts at Head of the Potomac

Great rowing today at the Head of the Potomac! The Girls Eight finished the 2.8 mile course in 18:46.8 — a very respectable 10th place, out of 19 boats entered. We finished ahead of all three B-CC boats, Woodrow Wilson, Annapolis and two Thompson’s Boat Club composite teams. The boys Four came in 6th, with a time of 19:23.2. They worked hard and held their own against Old Dominion, Bishop O’Connell, Wilson, and Bishop Ireton.

“Trail Blazer” Hits the Water

Blair Crew, Montgomery Blair High School’s crew team, is proud to announce the launch of the Trail Blazer, the team’s first ever racing shell of its own.

The Trail Blazer is a Vespoli 8 midweight shell and will be used by both boys and girls teams. Painted white with red stripes, the carbon-fiber hull was completely refurbished by the manufacturer. The Trail Blazer 8 is 62 feet long, and will be stored inside the boathouse at Bladensburg Waterfront Park.

Founded in 2008, Blair Crew has relied upon rented equipment for its first 3 years. Head Coach Eva Sullivan is looking forward to the competitive advantage she sees in the team having its own boat.

“Last year, we experienced heart-breaking equipment failure — a cracked hull at the starting line, a foot stretcher popping out of a borrowed boat, losing a race by 3/100ths of a second … The kids have worked really hard for three years, and deserve better equipment. This new boat will go a long way to making us more competitive. I’m really looking forward to a great year with a new boat.” said Coach Sullivan.

Blair Crew is a club sport at Montgomery Blair High. As a club sport, the team receives no financial support from the school or Montgomery County Public Schools. Blair crew organized into an independent 501(c)(3) in 2010, and has been fundraising with an eye towards purchasing its own boats since the beginning. “We have put an enormous amount of work into just getting the kids on the water. To finally have our own boat is thrilling,” stated club president Alyson Krogh.

The athletes themselves are probably the most excited, “The Trail Blazer is going be blazing fast, I can’t wait to get out on the water in it” said senior team captain Becca Ederer.

2011 Fall Season Begins
